![]() It was the only standard test recommended by IncreaseBroadbandSpeed (Heath, 2020) - with the caveat that it was best to choose a server that was not far away and that produced the most consistent results. Several sources (i.e., ZDNet, Lifewire, BroadbandSearch) named Ookla’s the best, or one of the best, speed test sites. This also seemed like a more realistic test setting: for my actual usage, I would want to know how the VPNs fared in such conditions. For the most part, it seemed that approach would minimize interference from other programs or devices: individual tests might err, but the results from multiple tests should provide clarity. I hoped to mitigate distortion by conducting multiple tests, and by measuring Surfshark, ProtonVPN, and no-VPN at the same time, one right after the other, in random order. Moreover, I would be taking a minute from a busy day to record speed test results - that is, I would not be actively using other programs while recording my results, but they would be running. My Windows 10 system was unfortunately restricted to WiFi.
